Tari sering disebut juga ”beksa”, kata “beksa” berarti “ambeg” dan “esa”, kata tersebut mempunyai maksud dan pengertian bahwa orang yang akan menari haruslah benar-benar menuju satu tujuan, yaitu menyatu jiwanya dengan pengungkapan wujud gerak yang luluh.
Seni tari adalah ungkapan yang disalurkan / diekspresikan melalui gerak-gerak organ tubuh yang ritmis, indah mengandung kesusilaan dan selaras dengan gending sebagai iringannya. Seni tari yang merupakan bagian budaya bangsa sebenarnya sudah ada sejak jaman primitif, Hindu sampai masuknya agama Islam dan kemudian berkembang. Bahkan tari tidak dapat dilepaskan dengan kepentingan upacara adat sebagai sarana persembahan. Tarian Jawa mengalami kejayaan yang berangkat dari kerajaan Kediri, Singosari, Majapahit khususnya pada pemerintahan Raja Hayam Wuruk.
Surakarta merupakan pusat seni tari. Sumber utamanya terdapat di Keraton Surakarta dan di Pura Mangkunegaran. Dari kedua tempat inilah kemudian meluas ke daerah Surakarta seluruhnya dan akhirnya meluas lagi hingga meliputi daerah Jawa Tengah, terus sampai jauh di luar Jawa Tengah. Seni tari yang berpusat di Kraton Surakarta itu sudah ada sejak berdirinya Kraton Surakarta dan telah mempunyai ahli-ahli yang dapat dipertanggungjawabkan. Tokoh-tokoh tersebut umumnya masih keluarga Sri Susuhunan atau kerabat kraton yang berkedudukan. Seni tari yang berpusat di Kraton Surakarta itu kemudian terkenal dengan Tari Gaya Surakarta. Macam-macam tariannya :

Srimpi, Bedaya, Gambyong, Wireng, Prawirayuda, Wayang-Purwa Mahabarata-Ramayana. Yang khusus di Mangkunegaran disebut Tari Langendriyan, yang mengambil ceritera Damarwulan.

Dalam perkembangannya timbullah tari kreasi baru yang mendapat tempat dalam dunia tari gaya Surakarta. Selain tari yang bertaraf kraton (Hofdans), yang termasuk seni tari bermutu tinggi, di daerah Jawa Tengah terdapat pula bermacam-macam tari daerah setempat. Tari semacam itu termasuk jenis kesenian tradisional, seperti :
-- Dadung Ngawuk, Kuda Kepang, Incling, Dolalak, Tayuban, Jelantur, Ebeg,
Ketek Ogleng, Barongan, Sintren, Lengger, dll.

Pedoman tari tradisional itu sebagian besar mengutamakan gerak yang ritmis dan tempo yang tetap sehingga ketentuan-ketentuan geraknya tidaklah begitu ditentukan sekali. Jadi lebih bebas, lebih perseorangan.
